UK Student Visa (Updated 2025-2026)

The UK educational system provides world-class education and employment opportunities for international students. Student Visa Fees and Costs (2025-2026)

  • Student visa fee: GBP 490 (outside UK) / GBP 490 (inside UK for extension)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): GBP 776 per year for students (reduced rate)
  • Short-term Study visa (up to 6 months): GBP 115
  • Short-term Study visa (up to 11 months): GBP 200
  • Child Student visa: GBP 490

Key Requirements

  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS): Must have a valid CAS from a licensed student sponsor
  • English language: Must meet the required level (usually CEFR B2 for degree level)
  • Financial requirements: Must show you can support yourself – GBP 1,334/month (London) or GBP 1,023/month (outside London) for up to 9 months
  • ATAS certificate: Required for certain postgraduate subjects in science, engineering, and technology

Working While Studying

  • During term time: Up to 20 hours per week
  • During holidays: Full-time work permitted

Graduate Route (Post-Study Work)

After completing your degree, you can switch to the Graduate visa which allows you to stay and work (or look for work) in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates). Fee: GBP 822. No minimum salary requirement and no sponsorship needed.

Important Changes for 2024-2025

  • Dependants can no longer accompany most students (except research postgraduates and government-sponsored students)
  • Students can no longer switch to a work visa before completing their studies
  • Maintenance requirements have been updated

This tier pertains to students who are between the ages of 4-17 years who wish to apply to study in the UK. The children between 4 and 15 years of age shall study in an independent fee paying school. Students between the ages of 16 and 17 years, studying level 3 National qualification framework courses have a choice to apply either in Tier 4 (child) student category or in Tier 4 (general) student category.

This category is for students who are beyond the age of 16. Students who are of the ages 16 and 17 years and studying at the B2 level of the English language courses of the Common European Framework, should apply under this category.

  • You can work once your study or vocational course has begun..
  • You can work on a part-time basis for a maximum of 20 hours in a week when your term is in session.
  • You can work for unlimited number of hours during the vacation periods. But it is important to note that your college or university must be on scheduled vacation.
  • You may work on an internship, which is based on your course.
  • If you are doing a postgraduate or a doctorate degree, you are then permitted to work as a postgraduate doctor or a dentist. However, it is essential that your course be recognized as a foundation program.
  • You are a student union sabbatical officer for around two years.
